The Spring 2003 issue of the DHI Newsletter was mailed to members in March.
DHI President Odd-Inge Schroder announces the General Assembly in Paris on Thursday afternoon, July 3rd, at 3:30, and asks for nominations for at-large Bureau members and officers. In a separate announcement, President Schroder calls for bids for the 2006 and 2009 conferences.
Our feature article, by Franziska Fehringer and Markus Beetz, is a bilingual German/English biography of the Deaf artist Richard Liebermann, who was a Holocaust survivor, and, continuing on the Holocaust theme, Will Sayers reviews Ryan and Schuchman's conference proceedings, Deaf People in Hitler's Europe. Susan Plann reviews Joan Mactavish's Bravo! Miss Brown, about Deaf-blind Canadian Mae Brown, and Dave Pancost reviews Edward Crean's study of Irish Deaf education. Three studies of pre-modern gesture system are reviewed: Sophia Rosenfeld's Revolution in Language by Jennifer Nelson, Andrea de Jorio's Gesture in Naples and Gestures in Classical Antiquity by Hannah Merker, and David Cram and Japp Matt's edition of George Dalgarno on Universal Language by your newsletter editor. Tom Harrington's book column includes reviews of two web sites by M. Miles, something we hope to do more of as we become aware of websites on Deaf history.
